wednesday words of wisdom

part of the reason i’ve always loved my birthday so much is that in my head it always kicks off the holiday season, with thanksgiving a couple weeks later then the christmas season starting, i’ve always loved this time of year because it means family time, celebration and adorable outfits.

this weeks wednesday words of wisdom are in honor of the upcoming holiday season!

1. “be dazzling” -kate spade

i love this quote. i think it’s so fitting with all the sparkle that is surrounding us this holiday season. i feel like everywhere i turn i see something covered in sparkle and i love it. i’ve already picked out a few different dazzling dresses to wear to various holiday parties coming up. my motto for this holiday season is most definitely to be dazzling not just in what i wear but also with my attitude.

2.“blessed is the season which engages the whole world in a conspiracy of love.”      – Hamilton Wright Mabie

i think what i adore so much about the holiday season is that everywhere you turn everyone seems to be happy and in the mood to celebrate. even when people are feeling stressed and allowing the chaos of the season get to them it doesn’t take much to remind them what the season is about- love. you see more people helping others, more volunteering and donations to charities, and just a general cheeriness.

3. “As we struggle with shopping lists and invitations, compounded by December’s bad weather, it is good to be reminded that there are people in our lives who are worth this aggravation, and people to whom we are worth the same.”     – Donald E. Westlake

similar to the last quote, this one is along the same idea, that no matter what is driving us crazy, frustrating us or causing anxiety in our lives the holidays remind everyone to cherish the ones closest to us, because they are worth the world.

4. “Winter is the time for comfort, for good food and warmth, for the touch of a friendly hand and for a talk beside the fire: it is the time for home.” – Edith Sitwell

between the good food, time with friends and family and warmth of the fire and a hot cup of cocoa this pretty much wraps up all my feelings about winter time in one line. for me winter has always been about friends and family because of the holidays but especially since going to college winter truly is the time for home. my friends and i have a tradition during Thanksgiving to get together and watch Love Actually, and at during winter break we all go skiing together and spend the evenings by the fire catching up and spending time with each other.

5. “baby it’s cold outside” frank loesser

with this cold weather finally hitting the d.c. area i’m starting to get very excited for the holidays. i’m especially excited about all the warm clothes i get to start wearing again to bundle up! i’m probably the only person in the city who’s actually excited that it’s 40 degrees

that’s it for this week, what are your favorite holiday/winter quotes?

23 years young

today is my 23rd birthday!! i love my birthday- who doesn’t? it’s an excuse to eat cupcakes and open presents. but one of my favorite parts of my birthday is when i get to sit down and go through my goals i set for myself the year before at my birthday and make a new goal list for the upcoming year.

the past six months have been full of big life changes for me- i graduated college, moved TWICE, started a new job, bought a car and got my first apartment. i’d be lying if i said i wasn’t feeling overwhelmed which is why i was especially excited to sit down last night with a cup of tea (yes, i’m drinking my tea out of my favorite minnie mouse mug) and my moleskine and set my 23 goals for the upcoming year.

How to Write a Goal List

1. read more

2. meditate once a day

3. start my own business

4. save up for a new computer

5. travel to a new country

6. write and send more snail mail

7. try more new recipes

8. develop my brand and blog

9. journal daily

10. spend more time with friends and family disconnected from technology

11. exercise more

12. eat healthier

13. walk more instead of driving or taking the metro

14. explore d.c. more

15. organize my apartment

16. create and stick to a budget

17. complete my first marathon

18. take a dance class- ballroom or swing please

19. buy a bicycle

20. ride a bike to work

21. take a kickboxing class

22. reconnect with an old friend

23. put $10 into savings for every goal accomplished

i love lists, there is something so therapeutic about crossing something off a list when i’ve completed it, goal lists are my favorite because i feel truly accomplished when i can check something off! how many of you are thinking about goals?

{wednesday words of wisdom} i’m turning 23

this weeks wednesday words of wisdom are in honor of my birthday (which is on thursday!!!) 23 isn’t a big celebration birthday, it’s not 21 or 25, there’s no taylor swift song about it- it’s the limbo of your early twenties. because of this i feel like i’ve been reflecting more in the last few weeks than i usually do around my birthday, here are some quotes and words of wisdom that are on my radar this year during my birthday week.

1. i will hold myself to a standard of grace not perfection

i need to get better about this. life isn’t perfect- how boring would it be if it was? embracing and accepting the imperfections are what makes life more colorful though don’t you agree?

2. “it matters not what a person is born, but who they choose to be.” -j.k. rowling

the last six months have come with a series of crossroads, i’ve gone from a college student to an unemployed post-grad to an intern at disney world to a young professional in washington d.c. one thing i’ve learned is we create our paths by choosing which way to go. dare to be different and shoot for the stars.

3. “sometimes your only available transportation is a leap of faith” – margaret shepard

i think most twenty-something young adults, gals and guys, can relate to this, there are a lot of uncertainties that come along with graduating college and preparing for the dreaded “real world” and i’m a firm believer that sometimes you just have to go for it and see what happens

4. “you is kind, you is smart, you is important” -kathryn stockett

who doesn’t adore this quote from the help, i wish i had someone saying this to me every morning before i start my day don’t you? say it to yourself, say it to your friends, your family, your coworkers. because you are kind, smart and important!

5. “today me will live in the moment unless its unpleasant in which case me will eat a cookie” -cookie monster

i think this one is especially important to remember to not only embrace the present and live in the moment but not to stress and get super overwhelmed when that moment may not be picture perfect. this is something i have a hard time implementing, but who else would rather relax and eat a cookie rather than stress about everything that is going wrong?

what words of wisdom are on your radar right now?
