on monday night we lost one of the greats, robin williams. after dinner i hopped on social media – because i had been away from it for a whole hour – and i was shocked when i saw a tweet “rip robin williams you will be missed.” i thought it was one of those hoaxes. you know the ones i’m talking about. when some pure evil soul decides they need to spark an internet rumor that someone like morgan freeman or meryl streep has died. i immediately started scrolling and social media was exploding with heartbreak and i started to accept the fact that it wasn’t a hoax. i waited and waited until the new york times confirmed it with a breaking news alert on my phone. i was heartbroken. you see, i grew up with robin williams. jumanji and mrs. doubtfire were on what seems now like a never ending loop in my house. and of course no one could have been a better genie in aladdin. it’s a truly devastating story, i hate to think that a man who brought so much joy to the hearts and lives of so many children and adults alike felt that he was worthless and had so little hope that he felt he needed to end it all. boston.com has an amazing article showing the massive outpouring of love and support, demonstrating just how far robin williams’s reach extended as people flocked to the bench he and matt damon sat on in good will hunting. he truly was one of a kind and one of the best in hollywood and he will be sincerely missed. from the man who inspired us with laughter, here are some of my favorite quotes from his movies over the years!
“real loss is only possible when you love something more than you love yourself” sean maguire. good will hunting
“you’ll have bad times but it’ll always wake you up to the good stuff you weren’t paying attention to” sean maguire, good will hunting
“but, oh, to be free. such a thing would be greater than all the magic and all the treasures in all the world” genie, aladdin
“but if there’s love, dear… those are the ties that bind, and you’ll have a family in your heart, forever.” mrs. doubtfire
“you’re only given a little spark of madness, you mustn’t lose it.” robin williams
so, for showing us a whole new world complete with a magic carpet, bringing the museum to life, giving us the nanny we never had, being our captain and so much more. bang-a-rang mr williams. you are loved and will be terribly missed.
