The Perfect Bodysuit

I’ve been taking a hard look at my closet over the past year, donating and selling a lot of stuff I just don’t wear anymore and really focusing on building a wardrobe with fewer, better quality, classic wardrobe staples that will last me a long time. While I’m still picking up some fun pieces like this t-shirt, from last week’s post, now that i’m in my mid-twenties I’m trying to get back to the basics and pick pieces that I can wear year round for years to come.

Being back in a super professional office setting I find myself reaching for pieces that are professional yet comfortable and most importantly, lots of things that work together. I’m laughing as I type that last line because this morning when I was getting ready for work I was thinking about this post and noticing that 90% of things hanging in my closet match, makes for easy outfit planning on mornings of a snow day when I still have to go to work… but I digress.

When it comes to wardrobe staples everyone is going to be a bit different based on personal preferences, but I do think there are a few things that every closet should absolutely have. Like the outfit I’m wearing in these shots – in my mind, you can’t go wrong with a classic white oxford and a pair of dark wash jeans. Although, this oxford has a little bit of a twist, it’s a bodysuit!! I’ve seen it on J.Crew for quite a while now and a few weeks ago curiosity got the best of me and I decided to order it to see what it was all about.

And guys, I am not exaggerating when I say it is the best shirt I have ever owned. Looks great, so comfortable, and the best part – it always stays tucked in. I have found that I rarely wear a button down to work anymore because as soon as I sit down at my desk it comes untucked and then I’m constantly fiddling with it throughout the day, this completely eliminates that problem. After about 2 hours of wearing it I went ahead and ordered the silk one in all three colors, because it’s just that good.

The bodysuit I’m wearing in these photos is the Stretch Perfect, so the material is quite different from the silk option and while I still love it, I will say, it wrinkles very easily. So if that’s something that bugs you, you might want to go straight for the silk bodysuit!

Out of the box, it looks so weird, it’s quite literally a grownup onesie with snaps at the bottom of it, so it’s a little awkward to get on but so worth it because it totally stays tucked in all day long, even if you have to put your hair up in a pony tail or reach for something on the top shelf. The snaps are super easy too, take about 15 second to re-snap making it easy to go to the bathroom (TMI I know but I know at least one of you out there wants to ask haha).

The buttons do gape a little bit so I just picked up some fashion tape and that seems to take care of it no problem. Other than that, I have no complaints, I have a fairly long torso and was really concerned it wouldn’t be long enough for me since most rompers jumpsuits just don’t fit me because of my height (I’m 5’11”) but the length on the regular is perfect! If you are worried about it pulling though, there is tall sizing, which is so hard to find when it comes to bodysuits and rompers!

I’m linking a few other wardrobe staples below, I’m still in the rebuilding phase of my closet and trying to remind myself that I don’t have to buy everything right at once but these are the items that I believe will really round out any wardrobe!

At some point when I have finished the process of cleaning out and rebuilding my closet, I’ll do a bit of a deeper dive into building a capsule-ish closet with fewer better things but for now I’ve included some things I have and a few that I have my eye on!

Have you tried the bodysuit yet? What are your must have wardrobe staples?
